About Gold-filled Wire
Many people are not aware of the differences between "gold-filled" and "gold-plated" jewelry. Basically, Gold-Filled jewelry is of a higher quality. It is also sometimes referred to as "Rolled Gold". Any Gold-Filled item is regulated by the government (as is solid gold) and must be at least 5% gold by weight. It is a professional jeweler's quality wire.
The gold I use is special ordered from strict quality manufacturers and is guaranteed to last a lifetime!!
A Few Facts About 14Kt Rolled Gold Wire
* 14/10 Rolled Gold wire creates high fashion jewelry at a fraction of the cost of solid gold and sells extremely well because of the fascination with gold.
* There is 100 times more gold in 14 kt. Rolled Gold than in gold plate.
* 14/10 Rolled Gold jewelry is usually considered a lifetime investment.
* 14/10 Rolled Gold is usually used for pendants, pins, collars, bracelets, and small rings.
Gold filled wire is available in 10k, 12k, and 14k, being the best quality and most durable. In the symbol 14/10, the 14 stands for the karat of gold used, and the 10 means 1/10.
Care of 14 Kt. Rolled Gold Jewelry
It's easy. Just care for it as you would any other gold jewelry. A simple inexpensive way to clean rolled gold jewelry (gold fill) is to soak it for a minute or two in a mild solution of ammonia and water or a commercial liquid jewelry cleaner. Rinse the jewelry thoroughly with water afterwards and let dry.
Remember this is NOT gold plate and in many cases is handed down from generation to generation. It is quite usual to find an antique gold filled piece that is nearly 75 years old or more!
How Gold-filled wire is Made
14 kt gold-filled wire is made by forming a tube of solid 14kt gold that is "filled" with a base metal for durability. The gold is bonded to the base metal with heat and pressure. The base metal is also gold in color and is made up of almost the same mixture of metals (usually a brass alloy) used to bring 24kt gold down to 14kt, 10kt, etc. The exterior of the product is solid 14 kt gold and everything you can see or touch is solid 14 kt gold. This is why it will never turn colors, chip or wear off. The gold in gold-filled wire is approximately 100 times thicker and more durable than gold-plate.
Your Gold-filled Jewelry will last for Generations.
History of Gold Filled Wire
14Kt Gold-filled jewelry was worn extensively in the Victorian Era and was said have first appeared in ancient Egypt.
Wire-sculpted jewelry, however, is a new and innovative technique of working with wire to form jewelry. It is much more than wire wrapping, it is an art-form in itself.
It is not soldered, glued or welded, but hand-sculpted, much as an artist sculpts with clay, from one or more continuous strands of the finest quality jeweler's wire. Most of the jewelry is made with 14 karat Gold-filled or Sterling Silver wire. Because of the very nature of the craft, no two pieces are ever exactly alike, therefore, when you purchase one of these designs, you will be wearing your own unique piece of Wearable Art.
Many of these Heirloom pieces are still handed down through generations and are considered highly collectible.
Gold-filled jewelry is economical & durable -- you enjoy the look and feel of solid gold at a fraction of the cost with more stability.
